The original club of this name, based at the Manchester Arena, was founded in 1995 but folded in 2002. A new club, known as Manchester Phoenix and playing at Altrincham Ice Dome, was formed the following year, but folded in 2015. Around the same time, Hull Stingrays withdrew from the Elite Ice Hockey League (EIHL). A new team, named Manchester Storm, was formed as the result of an agreement between the management of Altrincham Ice Dome and the EIHL, to fill the gap created by Hull's liquidation.
